Artist Alan Louis
Alan Louis paints mainly with water colours on paper. Painting is his way of expressing how he appreciates life and the beauty that he sees in even the ordinary mundane things. Whether he is painting a street scene, people, landscape, flowers, boats or even a single leaf, he derives joy and satisfaction from being able to freely express his own interpretations of what he perceives, guided only by the emotions and the inner self. In the process of painting, his emotions dictate the actual palette and composition such that the finished work may not exactly be what he had conceptualized when he started. That to him is the essence of painting - giving free rein to one's emotions.
Alan started painting with oils and poster paints when young but his calling came much later when he first viewed the watercolour paintings of his late uncle, Ivan Ernest Andrade. Excited and impressed, he learnt the painting techniques and soon developed a stronger interest to learn from others. He attended watercolour painting classes conducted at the La Salle School Of the Arts and visited all the watercolour painting exhibitions held by the famous Singaporean artist Mr. Ong Kim Seng. Later, Alan was also tutored by another Singaporean Artist Mr Ng Woon Lam, and subsequently by Mr Seah Kam Chuan who is the president of the Singapore Watercolour Society.
